Soil Maps and Soil Surveys
Marion County has a published soil survey
for the county. A soil survey is a collection of soil maps with soil
interpretations about how those soils can be used or managed for various
land uses. The Marion County Soil & Water Conservation District
(SWCD) has a computerized Compact Disc (CD) version of our published
Marion County Soil Survey. See Soil
Survey & Other Map Services information here or below to learn how
to obtain a CD version of our published soil survey. We are
anticipating very soon a computerized digitized version of our soil
survey, that will replace our published versions of the soil survey.
With the new digitized computerized version of our soil survey
information, Geographic Information System (GIS) soil maps can be
prepared.

Published soil surveys are available from
your county's Soil and Water Conservation District. They are
intended for many different users. Every county in Indiana has had a soil
survey completed that contains information which can be applied in
managing farms, woodlands, and other land uses. Soil surveys
can be used in selecting sites for roads, ponds, buildings and other
structures. They can help a home buyer or developer determine soil-related
hazards or limitations that affect home sites. They can be used to
determine the suitability of soils for pipelines, landfills, recreation
areas, and many other uses.
Soils in General
Many people assume that soils are all more
or less alike. They are unaware that great differences in soil properties
can occur within even short distances. Soils may be seasonally wet or
subject to flooding. They may be shallow to bedrock. Very clayey or wet
soils are poorly suited for septic tanks. A high water table makes a soil
poorly suited to basements or underground installations. They may be too
unstable to be used as a foundation for buildings or roads.
These soil properties and many others that affect land use are given in
soil surveys. Each soil survey describes the properties of soils in the
county or area surveyed and shows the location of each kind of soil on
detailed maps.
Conservation of land and water resources is an important part of all land
use. The maps and soil descriptions in soil surveys can help in
identifying specific conservation problems in a given area and planning
measures to reduce erosion, sedimentation, subsidence, slippage, wetness,
and other hazards.
Once you have access to the Marion County Soil Survey, you can find a soil
map for an area in the county that you are interested in learning more
about. The soil map for the area will be an aerial photo of the site
with groupings of soils identified by various soil symbols. A
Marion County Non-Technical
Soils Description of all the soils in Marion County has been
prepared. It can be used to help you understand the many variations
of soils in Marion County.
